Voices of Peace

Privacy Policy

How we handle data when you use the Voices of Peace Data Portal.

Overview

Respecting your privacy

This privacy policy applies to the Voices of Peace Data Portal at portal.everydaypeaceindicators.org, operated by the Everyday Peace Indicators research team in collaboration with the Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding at the Geneva Graduate Institute.

We designed this portal to respect your privacy. We do not use tracking cookies and we do not sell or share data with advertisers. The only personal information we hold is what you enter yourself when you download the dataset.

Collection

How do we collect data about you?

We collect anonymous usage data when you view and interact with the portal. We use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics service that does not use cookies and does not collect personal information.

Separately, we collect the name, email address, and, if you choose to give it, the affiliation you enter in the form before downloading the dataset. This is the only place on the portal where we ask you for personal information.

What we collect

What data do we collect as you browse?

Through Umami, we collect anonymous, aggregated information about how the portal is used:

  • The pages visited
  • The links and indicators clicked
  • The views, filters, and themes explored
  • How many results a search returned
  • Downloads and shares that are started
  • The source website
  • The device and browser used
  • The country you are visiting from

Your IP address is used only to determine country and is never stored. The data we collect cannot be used to identify you, and we do not track you across sessions or recognize returning visitors.

The words you type into search are not sent to our analytics service. Search terms are stored separately in the portal's own database, with no link to you or your visit, so that repeated searches can be answered faster.

When something on the portal breaks, we collect a technical error report through Sentry, an error-monitoring service, so we can fix the problem. A report contains the error message, where in the portal's code it happened, the page address without any search or filter details, the browser, operating system, and device type, and the time. It contains no cookies, nothing you have typed, and nothing you entered in the download form, and your IP address is not stored.

Dataset downloads

What data do we collect when you download the dataset?

You can browse every indicator in the portal without telling us who you are. Downloading the full dataset is the exception: we ask for your name and email address, optionally your affiliation, and for your agreement that we may store and use them.

When you download the dataset, we record:

  • The name you enter
  • The email address you enter
  • Your affiliation, if you enter one
  • The country you are downloading from
  • The date and time of the download
  • The version of the dataset you downloaded

Your IP address is used only to determine the country and is never stored.

Use

What do we do with the data collected?

We use the anonymous usage data to understand how the portal is used as a whole and to improve its content, design, and functionality. We do not use it to build profiles of individual visitors.

We use the name, email address, and affiliation you provide when downloading the dataset to understand who the data reaches, and we may use your email address to contact you about research or collaboration. We do not use it for any other purpose.

Storage

How do we store this data?

Analytics data is collected and stored through Umami. Data is retained in aggregated form for as long as it is useful for understanding and improving the portal.

The details you provide when downloading the dataset are stored in the portal's own database. We keep them for as long as the Everyday Peace Indicators project is active, and delete them sooner if you ask us to.

Access

Who has access to this data?

This data, including the details you provide when downloading the dataset, is available only to the Everyday Peace Indicators research team, the Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding, and Interactive Things, the agency that designed and developed the portal. We never sell your data or share it with third parties.

Your rights

Your data protection rights

The usage data we collect as you browse is anonymous, so we are not able to identify, retrieve, correct, or delete the records of any individual visitor.

If you have downloaded the dataset, we do hold your name and email address, and your affiliation if you entered one. You can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or withdraw your agreement to us using it.

To make any of these requests, or if you have questions about how we handle data, please contact us using the details below.
